"Oh, fair damsels and brave knights, where goest thou?" Once upon a time, such words might have echoed within these old walls. In the lands of South Tyrol, lie numerous castles and fortresses steeped in legend. Pick your fairy-tale castle, take a journey back in time to the Middle Ages and you’ll get a sense of what it was like to be one of the nobility!
Did you know that in South Tyrol, there are about 800 old castles and mansions – plus a number of medieval fortresses to discover? In the Vinschgau Valley alone, there are around 40. The most prominent is Churburg Castle in Schluderns/Sluderno, where every year jousting contests in knights’ costumes are re-enacted. Home to world-famous South Tyrolean mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, his Juval Castle museum near Naturns/Naturno is only a 10 min drive away from us. Tyrol Castle is perfect for a family outing, also thanks to the show at the ‘Birds of Prey’ Care Centre. This not only delights the kids, but also elicits the odd "ooh’s" and "ah’s" from grown-ups!
